The motto "Nunquam retrorsum" is associated in Germany and the United Kingdom and Brunswick-Lüneburg. Latin for, “adversity does not frighten”.
As a personal motto "Nunquam retrorsum" is documented in the 18th century for Duke Karl of Brunswick-Bevern of the House of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. The Brunswick battalion wore it and took part in the battles of Quatre-Bras and Waterloo in June 1815.
The Kingdom of Hanover adopted the motto "Nunquam retrorsum" in its national coat of arms. It was also chosen as the motto of the order when the Order of St. George was founded in 1839. The last king of Hanover, George V, also chose "Nunquam retrorsum" as his personal motto. In the court and state manual for the Kingdom of Hanover for 1853, the motto appears for the first time as an inscription on the state flag. The motto was also used in the Hanoverian army until the Battle of Langensalza on June 27, 1866, and since the fall of the kingdom on June 29, 1866, it has often been used as the motto of veterans associations.
